Scott WeaverDr. Weaver is Director of the Institute for Human Infections and Immunity, Scientific Director of the Galveston National Laboratory, and Professor in the Departments of Pathology and Microbiology & Immunology at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) in Galveston. He received his M.S. degree from Cornell University in Entomology, His PhD degree in Virology from the University of San Diego, California, and conducted postdoctoral research at Yale University before joining the UTMB faculty in 1994. His research focuses on mosquito-borne alphaviruses and flaviviruses, including mechanisms of emergence from enzootic cycles, evolution, systematics, mosquito-virus interactions, pathogenesis and vaccine development. His research research approaches include reverse genetics to identify adaptive mutations that mediate host range changes and viral attenuation, and field studies in Africa and Latin America to understand the ecology and epidemiology of urban emergence.
