Michel Tibayrenc, MD, PhD, born 1947, has worked on evolutionary genetics of pathogens for more than 30 years. A director of reseach at the French Institut de Recherche pour le Développement (IRD) a governmental organization devoted to research in southern countries, he has been the head of a laboratory on genetics and evolution of infectious diseases at the IRD center of Montpellier (France) for 19 years. He has worked in Algeria (1 year), French Guiana (1 year), Bolivia (7 years), the USA (4 years : UC Davis, UC Irvine and Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta) and Thailand (3 years, as the IRD representative). He is the founder and principal organizer of the MEEGID congresses (stands for Molecular Epidemiology and Evolutionary Genetics of Infectious Diseases) and the founder and editor-in-chief of Infection, Genetics and Evolution (Elsevier ; http://www.elsevier.com/locate/meegid ). He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and won the medal of the Brazilian Instituto Oswaldo Cruz for his work on Chagas disease. Mastered foreign languages include English, Spanish and Thailandese.
